Speech and language problems

An acquired brain injury is damage to the brain occurring after birth, for example due to stroke, cerebral haemorrhage, illness, oxygen deprivation or an accident. Its effects depend on the location and extent of injury and may affect physical, cognitive, emotional and social functioning.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disease and the most common cause of dementia. It usually develops gradually and affects memory, orientation, language, judgement and the ability to manage everyday tasks.

Dementia is an umbrella term for diseases that cause persistent decline in cognitive functions such as memory, language, orientation and problem-solving. The changes are greater than expected with normal ageing and gradually affect independence, relationships and everyday life.
