Re-Mind treatment for long-term effects after brain injury

Re-Mind is a medical treatment targeting neuroinflammation — a persistent inflammatory response in the brain that may develop after injury or illness. The aim is to reduce inflammation so affected brain cells have a better opportunity to communicate. Treatment may still be relevant even when the injury occurred several years ago.

How the treatment works

After a brain injury, areas of the brain may remain affected by a persistent inflammatory response. The cells in the area are not necessarily dead, but inflammation may disrupt communication between them.

With Re-Mind, anti-inflammatory medication is administered by injection. The aim is to reduce inflammation. If successful, communication between brain cells may improve and some functions may become easier to use again.

Targeting neuroinflammation

The treatment targets the inflammatory response around living but inhibited brain cells. It cannot restore dead brain tissue.

Clinical assessment first

Your medical history, symptoms, and relevant examinations are used to assess whether treatment may be appropriate and safe for you.

Effects vary between individuals

Some people experience a noticeable effect, while others notice little or no difference. It is not possible to predict in advance how an individual will respond.

Frequently asked questions about Re-Mind treatment

Here you can find brief answers to common questions about assessment, treatment, expected effects, and safety.

These are symptoms that continue beyond the initial expected recovery period following a concussion. They may include headache, dizziness, fatigue, sleep problems, sensitivity to light or sound, and difficulties with concentration or memory. Symptoms and recovery vary from person to person.

The assessment considers the injury, how the symptoms have developed, and their impact on everyday life. A clinical examination may focus on headache, the neck, balance, vision, sleep, mood, and cognitive difficulties. Other possible causes should also be considered because these symptoms are not specific to concussion.

Most people gradually improve within days or weeks, but some experience symptoms for months or longer. The duration cannot be predicted precisely for an individual. Contact a doctor if your symptoms do not improve, get worse, or make it difficult to manage everyday life.

Yes. Many people can benefit from an individualised, symptom-focused approach. Depending on the symptoms, this may include graded physical activity, treatment for headache or neck problems, balance and vision exercises, sleep support, and cognitive strategies. The plan should be tailored following a clinical assessment and adjusted according to your response.

Re-Mind may be considered for persistent symptoms following, among other things, a blood clot or bleeding in the brain, traumatic brain injury, brain surgery, a severe concussion or prolonged concussion symptoms, and long-term effects of COVID-19. Whether the treatment may be suitable depends on your symptoms and an individual assessment by a specialist in neurology – not on the diagnosis alone.

Before treatment, a neurolog reviews your medical history, symptoms, and medication, and screening blood tests are performed. If the treatment is considered appropriate and safe, anti-inflammatory medication is administered by injection.

The effect varies from person to person. Some experience noticeable changes, while others notice little or no difference. The outcome cannot be predicted with certainty in advance, and the treatment cannot restore dead brain tissue.

Off-label means that an approved medicine is used for a purpose other than the one for which it was originally approved. Before deciding and giving consent, you will receive information about the basis for the treatment, possible side effects, and alternatives.

Yes. In some cases, the treatment may be considered even if the injury occurred several years ago, because the assessment considers whether persistent neuroinflammation may be contributing to the symptoms. However, the time that has passed does not in itself indicate whether the treatment will be effective.

As with other medical treatments, side effects may occur. Before any treatment, the neurologist reviews your health, medication, and blood test results and explains the relevant risks so that you can make an informed decision.
